History of The River

Do you believe in miracles? I hope you will after you read all the miracles God has done, how He answered prayers over and over, sometimes at the last hour, sometimes before we had identified the need - He had the answer. I hope that you will be encouraged to at least give God the opportunity to do a miracle in your life. In the beginning we prayed before the Lord from the book of Ephesians 3:20-21. Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen.

Christianity was always intended to challenge man to have a greater faith in God. Too often in churches we only ask God for what we are comfortable to accept or what we can do in our own strength. We ask God to let us be a part of what He is doing. But when all is said and done, what people want is a living God that changes lives and saves us, a God who can crush the darkness with His power.

As you watch and read, you’ll see information, memories, and pictures of those who were part of this journey, and you’ll hear their stories. Some will be named, and some will not—but be assured that everyone involved, both then and now, was part of something truly special. This is a story for which only God can receive the glory. I hope you enjoy the journey.

God Bless,

The River's story began with a prayerful vision grounded in Ephesians 3:20-21, emphasizing faith in God’s ability to achieve the unimaginable. While serving in California, Founding Pastor Steve Tiebout and his wife, Melissa, felt called by God to plant a church in Cookeville, TN.

Early Days and Miracles
The River started in a living room with five adults and two children. Our first major breakthrough came after persistent prayers for a meeting space, leading to a miraculous six-month lease at Cane Creek Elementary, which extended to five years. Miracles continued as God provided essential resources, such as 225 chairs, sound equipment, and a worship leader—all through unexpected generosity.

When praying about a name for the church, they narrowed it down to two options: Celebration Church and The River Church. Seeking clarity, Steve was led to Ezekiel 47:9, where a vision shows a river flowing from God's temple, bringing life wherever it goes. This inspired the name The River Community Church, reflecting our mission to bring spiritual life and flourishing wherever our people live, work, and play.

The Land and Building
Through an absolute miracle, we received 24 acres of land next to the interstate. A donor purchased the land and gifted it to The River, allowing us to establish the Miracle Road campus. We embarked on an ambitious journey to construct our building debt-free, relying entirely on prayer and sacrificial giving. Despite challenges, the building was completed, serving as a testament to God’s faithfulness. Since that time, the Lord has provided the resources to purchase an additional 52 acres for His future work.

Expanding Ministry
As the church grew, we added ministries to serve the community, including a family pastor role and various outreach programs. In response to rising attendance, we constructed additional facilities, once again debt-free, through prayer and sacrifice.

Looking Ahead
In 2022, The River celebrated its 20th anniversary with renewed enthusiasm for the future and a vision to plant five new churches in Putnam County in 10 years and God has allowed us to plant four already! Our mission remains unwavering: to trust God for the impossible and make disciples for Christ.

From its humble beginnings, The River has grown into a thriving community of faith, built on prayer, vision, and reliance on God. Each step of the journey reflects His miraculous provision and the commitment of His people.
