I have been thinking about what it means to “give”. The Merriam-Webster dictionary has a list of definitions the first one being; “to make a present of”, but the one the stuck out to me was; “to put into the possession of another for his or her use”.
A while back our family had the blessing of receiving the gift of a new vehicle. We had plans of holding on to our old one for our younger kids that would all too soon be card holding drivers themselves. Shortly after we received this blessing, one of our loved ones found themselves without a vehicle. God spoke clearly to my husband and I that we should pay it forward. When deciding how to present this gift to our loved one we discussed all the things this person could use it for and if they would take care of it. At that moment we realized that if we are truly “giving” this gift, then we no longer have the say on how it will be used or be upset if it isn’t being taken care of the way we wished. We also realized that if God was telling us to do this, that is our job was to be faithful in obedience and it was the responsibility of the receiver after that.
My son once asked me why I gave money to a homeless man on the street because he was probably just going to go buy beer or drugs with it. I told him that I don’t know the persons intent. That Christ would look at me for my actions not theirs. That is was my job to help someone in need. Then, they will be judged on their actions. 2 Corinthians speaks to this very idea on sowing a reaping, motive, and how he loves the cheerful giver:
The point is this: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously.(7) Each person should do as he has decided in his heart – not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver (8) And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work. 2Corininthians 9:6-8
Think about it: Do we truly give with a cheerful heart of no limitations? Do we give with the right motive of obedience? How can you step out in faith today and sow God’s love with generosity?
Pray: Father, my provider, let me give in obedience of sowing into your kingdom. Let me give with a cheerful heart just like you always give to us even when we do not deserve your mercies. Thank you Father for your unfailing love. Amen
