I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love.
I have often said that my daughter Adeline is my little shadow. When we’re at home together during the day, she follows me from room to room, stopping contentedly to play in whatever room I’m in. If I’m in the bathroom drying my hair, she’s sitting in our Jacuzzi tub playing with her toys. If I’m in the kitchen cooking, she’s there sitting on a barstool. If I walk outside for more than a few minutes, I can be confident she will come find me. Wherever I go, she is there with an armful of toys. She isn’t loud or demanding (unless, of course, it is meal time), but she is reliable, tenacious, and preciously unescapable.
The love of Jesus is a whole lot like that. It follows us wherever we go. We cannot escape it or run far enough away from that it can’t catch us. We can’t hide from it, and it will always find us. No power on earth or in hell can separate us from it (Romans 8:38). That is how much God loves us, and he wants us to remain in the security of his love.
So what can we DO to remain in his love? Well, it actually doesn’t start with DOING something. It’s more about BEING something- being confident in his love for me. When I’m completely confident in God’s love for me, it is easier for me to trust him. And when I trust him, I’m willing to do what he says. And by doing what he says, I am obeying his commands.
When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.
So it all starts with love, a love that follows us wherever we go. We are being followed. Will you let his love catch you today?
Think About: Have you let the love of God catch up with you today? Sit quietly for just a moment and rest in his love. Now ask him to show you an area of your life where you could be more confident in his love for you.
Pray: Father God, Oh how you love me. Help me to experience your extravagant love today in a very tangible way. Help me to trust you enough to follow and obey you in every single area of my life. You have good plans for me, Father. Thank you for what you are doing in me. Amen.
